BC Championship Snow Sculpture Competition
A larger than life event
The BC Championship Snow Sculpture Competition is open to snow carvers across the province who compete during Winter Carnival against 7 other teams. The are all competing for the cash prize and hopes of winning the spot to represent British Columbia at the National competition at the Quebec Winter Carnival in January / February the following year.
Rules for the snow sculptures:
Each team shall consist of three members:
- One member will act as the captain
- The captain must be a professional artist, sculptor or an art student
- All team members must be at least 19 years of age
- All team members must have been residents of BC for the six months preceding the competition
The team must complete its work between the commencement of the competition at 10am on the first Friday of Carnival and the conclusion of the competition ends at 10am on the first Sunday of Carnival. Judging of the competition will begin at 10 that Sunday.
The snow block
Each team will be given a block of snow approximately 8 feet high by 8 feet wide by 12 feet long. The volume of the finished work must not exceed the original volume of the block. The only materials allowed are snow and water.
The snow sculptures are judged on creativity, technique, composition and communication (the power of the sculpture to capture and hold the interest of the viewer).
